Challenges for Ranking in Google AI

CPI Service had already built strong performance in traditional search, but ranking in Google’s AI Overviews came with a different set of challenges. AI visibility depends not only on keywords and backlinks but also on how content is structured, cited, and trusted by Google’s AI systems:

  • Lack of AI Overview Presence : CPI Service was completely absent from Google’s AI Overviews. Even for common plumbing and HVAC searches, their content was not being pulled in or cited, which meant potential customers never saw them in this new layer of results.
  • Competitor Dominance in AI Search : Competitors were gaining visibility in AI Overviews and being cited as sources, even when their actual services or authority were weaker. This gave rivals a stronger position in front of local homeowners.
  • Missed Traffic Opportunities from AI Overviews : With no placement in AI Overviews, CPI Service missed a growing stream of high-intent traffic. Homeowners relying on AI answers for quick service decisions were being directed elsewhere.
  • Expertise Not Recognized by AI : Despite having proven experience in plumbing and HVAC, CPI Service’s authority was not acknowledged in AI-driven results. The business’s knowledge and credibility were not being surfaced, which limited trust and brand visibility online.

About the Client

The client is a plumbing and HVAC company in San Jose with 35+ years of experience, offering repair, installation, and emergency services across the Bay Area.

What Is the Main Objective?

Securing visibility in Google’s AI Overviews was the primary goal, as these results appear above traditional listings and strongly influence customer decisions. To achieve this, the focus was on creating content that AI systems could recognize, cite, and trust for plumbing and HVAC queries. This placement aimed to generate consistent traffic, strengthen brand visibility, and build trust with homeowners searching online.

Performance Analysis & Visibility Monitoring

Understanding performance in Google’s AI Overviews requires more than traditional SEO tracking. It means identifying whether a business is included in AI answers, checking how often competitors appear, and measuring how AI visibility contributes to traffic and brand exposure. For local service companies, monitoring these factors is essential to ensure their expertise is being recognized and their visibility keeps pace with changing search behaviors.

Analyzing AI Overview Visibility in the Plumbing Industry

As part of our analysis, we examined how AI Overviews were displaying plumbing and HVAC results and what factors influenced which businesses appeared.

  • AI Overview Coverage : We measured how often plumbing and HVAC searches in San Jose and nearby areas triggered AI Overviews.
  • Competitor Analysis : We reviewed which local competitors were cited most frequently in AI-generated results.
  • Service-Level Insights : We analyzed high-intent service keywords around repairs, replacements, and emergency needs, showing how visibility could be secured across multiple terms.
  • Authority Patterns : We evaluated whether AI prioritized businesses with stronger reviews, certifications, or long-standing history.
  • Visibility Shifts : We tracked how placements changed over time to identify growth opportunities and maintain consistency.

Monitoring Your Current AI Overviews' Visibility

AI visibility shifts often, so we monitored when the site was cited, where it was missing, and how it compared to competitors.

Our Focus :

  • Track the keywords that trigger AI Overviews and check if the site is included.
  • Identify opportunities where the site ranks in organic results but is not cited in AI answers.
  • Compare mentions against competitors to measure relative visibility.

Our Process :

  • We use Ahrefs’ Site Explorer to review the Organic Keywords report and identify terms connected to AI Overviews.
  • Within Ahrefs, we apply filters for SERP Features → AI Overviews to see all keywords where the site is currently cited.
  • We then adjust the settings to find cases where AI Overviews appear but the site is not included, highlighting missed opportunities.
  • These results are compared with competitor mentions, helping us decide where to focus efforts for stronger visibility.

Tracking AI Traffic in GA4

We use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to track AI-related traffic, combining referral filters and regex patterns to identify how AI platforms contribute to site activity.

  • Traffic Acquisition Setup – Begin in GA4’s Traffic Acquisition reports and narrow the view to referral traffic, creating a baseline for AI-related visits.

Step : 1

Step : 2

  • Source Filtering with Regex – Apply a filter for Session Source/Medium and use a custom regex expression to group AI domains like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Bard, and Gemini into one trackable view:
  • Page-Level Insights – With filters applied, review GA4’s Pages and Screens report to see which service pages attract AI-driven clicks and how this traffic supports conversions.

Our Strategy for Google AI Ranking

Our strategy focused on aligning content with how Google’s AI Overviews generate and cite results. By targeting question-driven queries, structuring content for AI readability, strengthening brand reputation, and embedding trust signals, we positioned the business to be recognized as a reliable source.

  • Research Question-Centric Keyword : We optimized keywords in a Q&A format, since AI Overviews usually show answers written as direct responses to questions. To expand coverage, we also pulled insights from Google’s People Also Ask section, which provided additional related questions AI could cite. By comparing traditional organic results with the sources appearing in AI Overviews, we identified content gaps and rewrote answers to be sharper, more concise, and easier for AI to recognize and display.
  • Content Structure for AI Readability : We structured pages in a way that both people and AI systems could easily understand. Content was written using natural language triples/tuples (Subject–Verb–Object), which makes it simpler for AI to extract accurate information. To avoid confusion, the writing was kept direct and concise, supported by a clear heading structure (H1, H2, H3) that highlighted the main topics and subtopics.
  • Enhanced AI Reputation & Brand Authority : We strengthened brand signals beyond the website by earning citations in trusted directories that AI systems often use for comparisons, such as local business listings and industry platforms. To build conversational authority, we contributed to forums and community discussions like Reddit and Quora, where genuine insights help AI recognize relevance. Alongside this, we consistently monitored brand mentions across AI platforms to maintain accuracy, while high-quality backlinks from reputable domains reinforced overall authority.
  • Establish Content Trustworthiness (E-E-A-T) : Each service page was designed to demonstrate Experience, Expertise, Authority, and Trust (E-E-A-T). This included supporting content with facts, references, and evidence, while also highlighting author details such as certifications and years of expertise. To strengthen user-driven trust signals, we showcased customer testimonials and reviews, and emphasized service credibility with visible certifications. By keeping all information transparent, accurate, and verifiable, the content reflected the kind of reliable material that AI systems prioritize when selecting sources.

What We Achieved

The strategy delivered measurable results within hours. CPI Service began appearing inside Google’s AI Overviews for multiple high-intent plumbing keywords. This placement gave them premium visibility at the very top of search, where Google highlights trusted providers. For a local service business, this meant being seen immediately when homeowners searched for urgent solutions, a position that builds trust and captures traffic.

This visibility was secured across several competitive searches, including:

1) Keyword : sewer line repair services los altos

2) Keyword: faucet installation san jose

3) Keyword : sewer line replacement services stanford

4) Keyword: plumbing fixture installation san jose

5) Keyword: toilet replacement service san jose

6) Keyword: emergency sewer line replacement atherton
